Manage the Moment

by

Do What You Can Do Now

Every now and then I go through what I call my “overwhelmed stage”. Suddenly I’m facing deadlines, obligations, professional demands and those self-imposed. Most women can relate to not having enough hours in the day to do it all! As we continually “multi-task” it’s no wonder we are constantly trying to juggle all the balls coming at us at the same time. It seems no matter what I’m doing, I’m doing something else at the same time or my mind is off somewhere considering the options necessary to handle the next activity. I read while on the treadmill, I’m on the phone while preparing dinner, I’m checking off items on my to-do list while parked at a stop light, folding clothes while watching a tv movie, or thinking of future tasks I need to finish. This endless cycle keeps spiraling round and round.

A few weeks ago, however, I experienced an “ah ha” feeling while reading long distance runner Stu Mittleman’s book about how to go the distance in running and in life. There staring at me off the page was his simple yet profound message, “manage the moment”. That’s it? That’s it!

Manage the moment. Stay exactly where you are. Place no focus on anything just past or anything yet to occur. Stay on task one moment at a time. Do what you can do, now. Finish what you can complete, now.

Know that that is okay. Recently I’ve been staying present. And you know what I’m experiencing? Being present is being in control. It works for me! It can work for you, too.

Common Denominator

by
July 13, 2011 Connection

It is our uniquesness that creates our human tapestry It is not my intention to give you a lesson in fractions, however, it occurs to me that many fractions have common denominators just as many people share common qualities. The numerator of a fraction (top number) represents its uniqueness. For us it can represent our

We Rely on One Another

by
July 6, 2011 Life

Acknowledge What We Offer One Another Every now and then I take a moment to realize how inter-dependent we are. We go about our routines and interact with many people each day. Do you acknowledge just how significant others are to our wellbeing? If not for cleaners, where would I go for my dry cleaning?

The Older I Get, The Faster the Time

by
June 29, 2011 Life

Time Plays Tricks on All of Us When I was younger, people would tell me that the older you get the faster the time goes by. Of course, I knew that was not possible. After all, time never changes its pace. It moves universally at the same speed. What I am able to accomplish during

Self Discipline – Who Wins?

by
June 22, 2011 Self Discipline

Do What You Say You’re Going To Do Remember the two ways you were disciplined growing up? The first was the “threat”. “If you don’t do your homework, you can’t go out and play.” The other one was a “reward”. “If you do your homework, we’ll go out for ice cream.” The end result in

Be Memorable

by
June 16, 2011 Networking

One of my favorite sayings is, “Why show up unless you want to be remembered!” I follow this with, “Leave positive, indelible imprints everywhere you go and in everything you do.”   In other words, be remembered for the right reasons. There are actually two aspects to being memorable – how you dress and how you

Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda

Move Forward, Not Backward It’s bad enough when I beat myself up for my shortcomings. When someone else decides to beat me up, that’s another issue. The fact is that once something we’ve said or done is over, regardless of how we handled ourselves, it’s over. We can’t turn back the clock, redo one’s behavior,

Applaud Your Success

by
June 8, 2011 Motivation

Why do I rely so much on others giving me credit for what I accomplish instead of giving myself credit? There are times when I get so much done that by the end of the day I amaze myself. When that happens, I think, does anyone even notice all that I do? With this in

Show Up and Be Remembered

You Never Know Unless You Participate How often have you resisted going somewhere, allowed someone to change your mind, and ended up having a wonderful time? I’m amazed at stories I’ve heard of people meeting someone special under circumstances that might not have happened if a friend had not pushed against a friend’s resistance!  The
